Defining Dining

The goal is to give you confidence in how your plan works and to ensure you have access to the food options that fit your lifestyle. Whether you're new to campus or simply need a refresher, this guide provides everything you need in one place. Review each question by selecting the plus signs.

Most first-year students living in residence halls are required to have a meal plan because it ensures consistent access to meals on campus. Plans are built around Dining Center Meals, Dining Dollars, and sometimes Flex Meals depending on the plan. Specific start and end dates are posted each semester, and coverage typically aligns with the academic calendar. Off‑campus students can still purchase a plan or build their own with Blocks and Dining Dollars if they want flexibility.

Dining Center Meals provide entry to all‑you‑care‑to‑dine locations like Seasons Marketplace, Union Drive Marketplace, and Friley Windows. Dining Dollars work like a debit card at ISU Dining cafes, markets, and fast‑casual spots, and they expire at the end of spring semester. Flex Meals, available with Campanile and Block plans, act like a swipe worth a set dollar value in retail locations. Together, these components offer a mix of sit‑down meals and grab‑and‑go convenience.

You can use Dining Center Meals at Seasons Marketplace, Union Drive Marketplace, and Friley Windows, and you can use Dining Dollars or Flex Meals at retail locations across campus. Popular retail options include campus cafes, markets, and fast‑casual venues in academic buildings and student hubs. Panda Express and Sushi Do accept Dining Dollars but not Meal Swipes or Flex Meals. If you’re ever unsure, staff at the register can quickly guide you.

Dining Center meals are for on‑site, all‑you‑care‑to‑dine visits at Seasons Marketplace, Union Drive Marketplace, and Friley Windows. GET & Go uses one dining center swipe for a ready‑to‑pick‑up meal ordered through the GET Mobile app, with up to two GET & Go uses per day. Flex Meals are for retail locations and carry a set value, and if you go over, you simply pay the difference with Dining Dollars or a cashless payment option. If you spend under the Flex value, no refund is provided.

Use the GET Mobile app to see your remaining Dining Dollars, Dining Center Meals, and Flex Meals in real time. The app also lets you order ahead at select locations for faster pickup. If you need to change your plan, you can upgrade any time and use StarRez for other adjustments within posted deadlines. When you run low, you can add Dining Dollars or purchase block meals.

Dining centers don’t offer full to‑go meals, but you can leave with a piece of fruit or a dessert. For portable meals, order GET & Go through the app and pick up at participating locations; you can use this option up to two times a day. Retail locations also make it easy to grab packaged or prepared items using Dining Dollars or Flex Meals. This setup gives you quick options between classes or during busy days.

Flex Meals are available to Campanile and Block plans and can be used at retail locations instead of dining centers. Each Flex Meal is valued at $13.75 beginning Fall 2026, and you can pay any amount over that value with Dining Dollars or a cashless payment option. If your total is less than the Flex Meal value, no change or credit is given back. You can also use a Flex Meal to enter a dining center if that’s more convenient.

Hawthorn offers a special Flex Meal Deal where one swipe covers a full meal with an entrée and two sides. It’s designed to make budgeting simple so you don’t have to worry about going over the Flex value at that location. This option is especially helpful for students who want a consistent, complete meal at a known value. The deal is exclusive to Hawthorn in Frederiksen Court.

ISU Dining supports students with allergies and special diets by offering labeled options and staff assistance across locations. You can speak with team members to identify safe choices or request guidance that fits your needs. Reasonable accommodations are available, and coordination ahead of time can help ensure a smooth dining experience. Don’t hesitate to ask; staff are trained to help.

In the instance where a student is not able to source a portable meal option on their own, recovery meals are also available at the dining centers. To do this, they must email the location at least two hours before pickup with their name, student ID, contact information, dietary needs, pickup time, and the name of the person retrieving the meal. A friend or roommate may pick up multiple meals at once by checking in with the greeter. The cost of the meal is deducted from the student’s meal plan, or charged if their balance is empty. Recovery meals help minimize the spread of illness, and students with highly contagious symptoms should avoid entering dining facilities.
